If you're buying your motorcycle privately it's worth checking out the seller as well as the motorcycle. Avoiding obvious crimes is easy but a little more detective work can steer you towards landing a prime motorcycle rather than saddling yourself with a lot of headache. We have created a list of some typical sellers and how to spot them.
The Serial Motorcycle Buyer
This person loves motorcycles so much he buys loads. Unfortunately for him, he has to sell one to get the next. The chances are he's a real enthusiast and won't buy a duff machine, but he knows he won't have a motorcycle for too long so will be reluctant to replace tires, chains and other consumables. Be prepared to factor in the cost of replacements if worn.
Stopping Riding
Either they're leaving the country, a baby's on the way, the other half has put their foot down or something else is stopping them riding. They won't have to get a certain amount of cash to fund their next motorcycle so they might just take a low offer. Will they sell their riding gear too? It's worth asking even if you don't want to buy it to see if they're being honest or not.
Passing the Headache
This owner has bought a motorcycle. It's a bad one. He's going to sell it on rather
than deal with the problem, which could be anything from an engine on the brink of disaster to the fact it's a stolen or the paperwork is missing what comes with the motorcycle and the motorcycle could be seized by the law. How do you spot it? Check the greenbook and let somebody from the Department of Land Transport validate the originality of the paperwork.
Very low Kilometers on the Clock Motorcycle
The motorcycle's done less than 1,000 kilometers per year. It sounds too good to be true. And it may be. But be aware standing can harm a motorcycle. Batteries die in weeks and can cost a good amount of money for a decent replacements. Tires perish or develop flat spots if stood for months. Bearings and brakes can seize. A low kilometer motorcycle can be superb buy but don't be too keen to hand over cash without giving it a good check over. Analog or digital clocks can be turned back for a few hundred Baht behind MBK Center in Bangkok.
